Moisture can change the requirements for a signage backlighting system. A rigid LED bar that works well inside a dry indoor light box may need additional protection when the cabinet is installed in a damp, splash-prone or partially exposed location.

An IP65 water-resistant LED rigid bar can be considered for these projects, but the rating should not be treated as a universal promise for every outdoor installation. Buyers should confirm the exact product configuration, enclosure design, cable entries, cut points and installation limits before approving a lighting layout.

Start with the real installation environment

The word "outdoor" is too broad to define a product requirement. A covered menu board, a sign under an awning and an exposed roadside cabinet can face very different levels of rain, dust, condensation, temperature change and maintenance access.

Before selecting the LED bar, record:

  • whether the sign is indoors, covered or directly exposed;
  • the expected direction and frequency of water contact;
  • whether water can collect inside the cabinet;
  • the position of cable entries, joints and drainage paths;
  • the operating temperature and ventilation conditions;
  • whether the sign will be washed with pressurized water; and
  • whether any part of the lighting system could be temporarily submerged.

These details help distinguish a water-resistant application from one that needs a higher level of protection. IP65 should not be interpreted as a submerged-use rating.

What changes in the protective-channel version

The MIJI Rigid Bar-2R-145 IP65 version places the LED board inside a protective channel and uses end mounting clips. The current product data lists a DC 12V input, 12W power per bar, 12 SMD 2835 three-chip LEDs and a 170-degree PMMA optical lens.

The broad lens is intended to distribute light across a wide area for light boxes, illuminated signs and slim display cabinets. The rated luminous flux is 1100-1200 lm per bar, with CCT options of 3000K, 4000K, 6000K and 10000K.

The confirmed PCB dimensions are 920 x 14.5 x 1 mm. These are the dimensions of the internal aluminum PCB, not the complete protective housing. Buyers who need exact cabinet clearances should request the full assembled dimensions before machining or mass production.

Water resistance depends on the complete installation

An IP-rated LED bar is only one part of a finished sign. The Power Supply, connectors, cable joints, wire exits and cabinet openings can still become water-entry points.

A project review should therefore cover the complete electrical path. The LED bar must use a regulated DC 12V constant-voltage supply and must not be connected directly to AC mains. The selected power supply and every connection point should match the environmental requirements of the installation.

Good enclosure design also matters. Water should not be allowed to collect around the bars or connectors, and cable routing should avoid creating a path that guides water toward an electrical joint. Final installation instructions should be approved for the specific cabinet design.

Cutting changes the original seal

Rigid Bar-2R-145 can be cut after each LED at the marked cut line. This helps installers adapt a lighting row to the available cabinet length, but cutting the protected version opens the original seal.

After cutting, the exposed section must be resealed using an engineering-approved method before the bar is installed in a moisture-prone location. The resealing material and procedure should be confirmed for the exact order. Do not assume that an improvised seal will preserve the original level of protection.

For a repeat project, prepare and inspect one shortened sample before processing the full quantity. The sample should confirm electrical operation, polarity, mechanical fit and the approved seal-restoration process.

Wide-angle optics still require a sample test

Water resistance does not determine lighting uniformity. Cabinet depth, spacing between bars, edge distance, diffuser transmission and reflective surfaces still control the appearance of the illuminated face.

The 170-degree optical lens provides a broad distribution pattern, but there is no universal spacing value for every sign. Build a sample using the intended cabinet, diffuser and graphic material. Inspect it for hot spots, dark bands, edge shadows and color differences before approving production.

If the surface is uneven, adjust the row spacing or cabinet geometry one variable at a time. Increasing wattage alone may raise brightness without correcting the distribution problem.

Questions to confirm before ordering

Send the supplier enough project information to check both the optical layout and the environmental requirements:

  1. What are the illuminated width, height and internal cabinet depth?
  2. Is the installation indoors, covered or directly exposed?
  3. Can water reach the LED bars, connectors or power supply?
  4. Will full-length bars be used, or will any section be cut?
  5. What diffuser and printed-face materials will be used?
  6. Which CCT is required: 3000K, 4000K, 6000K or 10000K?
  7. What quantity, destination and installation schedule apply?
  8. Is a model-specific IP report required for project approval?

Providing drawings and clear cabinet photos can reduce selection errors. It also allows the supplier to identify missing dimensions or protection details before samples are produced.

Select the protection level from the project, not the label alone

An IP65 water-resistant rigid bar can be a practical option for signage projects where moisture protection is required, provided that the exact model evidence and application limits are confirmed. It should not be presented as suitable for immersion or for every exposed outdoor condition.
